Sock Chair is a sitting and rocking chair with a squishy and playful seat made out of rolled socks, for young users to relax and play with. The goal was to make a furniture piece out of a material used in a non-traditional way. The sock storage allows a child to organize creatively and playfully. It is intended for children aged 5-10 to sit on one side, and a rock when easily flipped over to the other.
By studying Piaget’s "Stages of Development", I focused on his "Pre-operational Stage" where 2 to 7 year old children present major developmental changes. In this stage, children begin to think symbolically, and develop a sense of organization. With the Sock Chair, I am incorporating play into the furniture piece that would make chores fun, and help children understand the importance of organization, and thus productivity in mind!
